Below is a bulletin insert related to proposals in the state budget that would cut back funding for the school breakfast and lunch programs. At the Synod Assembly in May a resolution was passed that calls on congregations to take action to encourage re-authorization and expansion of the Federal Child Nutrition Programs, and also to call for a restoration of state funding for school breakfast and lunch programs in the New Jersey. The proposed State budget would cut $5.9 million dollars of state support from the school lunch and breakfast programs. Working closely with partners in the advocacy community the Lutheran Office of Governmental Ministry succeeded in identifying legislators to introduce a Budget resolution that would fully restore state funding for school meals. This resolution, however, must be adopted by the State Legislature in order to make this change in the budget that will go to Governor Christie for his approval.

Since all of this has and will continue to take shape over the next two weeks, it is urgent that people contact their two State Assemblymen/women and their State Senator, encouraging them to support restoring money for school meals. Consistent with the action of the Synod Assembly, The NJ Synod Task Force on Childhood Hunger has prepared the attached bulletin insert for use in congregations of the synod so that our voice can be heard. Please urge people to take a moment to write their state Legislators as soon as possible. They may also phone their offices and leave a message. Each person is represented in the State Legislature by two Assembly members and one senator. The insert includes a web address www.njleg.state.nj.us which includes a "click-on" button to help people access the names and contact information for the people who represent them. Letter or calls need to go to all three of these elected officials. Thank you for your help in getting word out on this important initiative! It is essential for legislators to hear from people if this restoration of funds is to happen.

The Justice & Peace Mission Team is an "umbrella group" of leaders of 10 Synod "Task Groups" or "Teams".  Each group is made up of dedicated members from congregations across the NJ Synod.  Members study a specific injustice, its causes, ways it is addressed within the ELCA, and things our congregations can do to make a difference.  We provide training opportunities and links to resources to help congregations make this difference.  We have a strong advocacy component - recognizing fighting injustice is more than charity, we use the gift and responsibility of citizenship to "speak to power" in the tradition of the prophets working for God's justice.

Our work groups and teams share information through workshops at synodical events, special seminar days and our web page www.njsynod.org/justice, and also welcome invitations from clusters, congregations and organizations.

If you would like to invite one of our members to speak with your cluster, congregation, council, organization or committee, please contact us in advance.  If you or a member of your congregation feels called to work on one of our issues, we want to speak with you!  We invite you to call or write, ask questions, tell us about your ministry and let us know if you might be interested in serving on a Task Group.
